Rams change kicker to Mevis for 49ers game

LOS ANGELES — The Los Angeles Rams are set to make a shift at kicker this week, promoting Harrison Mevis from the practice squad for their matchup against the San Francisco 49ers, as announced by head coach Sean McVay on Friday.

Following the Rams’ Week 9 win, where kicker Joshua Karty was unable to convert an extra point and a 39-yard field goal, McVay remarked that the special teams’ challenges «cannot persist like this.»

Earlier this week, the Rams brought on Mevis and long-snapper Jake McQuaide to the practice squad. McVay shared that McQuaide will take over the long-snapping duties on Sunday, stepping in for Alex Ward.

The Rams have struggled on five field goal attempts this season (2 blocked, 3 missed), ranking tied for the second most in the NFL, as per ESPN Research. Their field goal success rate of 67% stands as the lowest in the league.

Additionally, Los Angeles has failed to convert three extra points this season, also tied for second most in the NFL. Notably, two of these attempts were blocked, surpassing the total for the entire league combined this season.

On Friday, McVay expressed that he still holds «a lot of confidence» in Karty, indicating that the kicker’s position is «not in jeopardy.» He mentioned that they will reassess the situation next Monday.

«What I can’t foresee is the future, but I believe this will be the optimal choice for this game,» McVay stated. «However, I have faith that we have two capable kickers on our roster.»
