Johnny Kenny and Jamie McGrath have been called into the Republic of Ireland squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers against Portugal and Hungary.
Celtic striker Kenny, who scored the opening goal in Sunday’s 4-0 win over Kilmarnock, has been drafted in as cover in attack with Evan Ferguson ruled out of Thursday’s game against Portugal in Dublin (19:45 GMT) with an ankle injury.
The Roma striker will continue his rehab in an effort to be passed fit for Sunday’s final Group F game away to Hungary (14:00 GMT).
Last week, Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrimsson said 22-year-old Kenny would be «next in line» for a call-up due to his recent form that has now seen him score four goals since Martin O’Neill took the interim reins at the Glasgow club.
Hibernian midfielder McGrath is a replacement for Bristol City’s Mark Sykes who sustained a gash on his leg during last week’s 1-0 defeat by Blackburn Rovers.
McGrath won his last cap as a substitute in a 2-1 away win against Finalnd in October 2024.
