Former Chelsea midfielder Oscar is contemplating retirement from professional football following a health incident, sources informed ESPN Brasil.
Oscar, 34, is still hospitalized in Brazil for observation after experiencing unusual cardiac reactions during a standard preseason medical exam with his team São Paulo on Tuesday.
The Brazilian midfielder momentarily lost consciousness, and sources revealed to ESPN’s André Hernan and Bruno Andrade that this incident has raised significant worry for Oscar and his family, who are against the idea of him returning to play.
The source indicated that Oscar does not need to continue his career for financial stability after 13 years in Europe and China.
Additionally, the athlete is also considering his family life, as his wife is expecting their third child, sources reported.
São Paulo has no plans to terminate Oscar’s contract, which is set to expire in December 2027.
Currently, the Brazilian club is primarily focused on the athlete’s health and not on any potential financial benefits for the club should a contract termination occur.
Oscar rejoined his childhood club São Paulo in December 2024 after spending eight years in China.
He is a very beloved player at São Paulo, and fans have shown their support following this incident.
The president of São Paulo, Julio Casares, visited Oscar in the hospital on Wednesday.
Oscar’s situation has also attracted the attention of officials at Shanghai Port, the club where he spent several years.
Shanghai Port has reportedly welcomed the Brazilian should he need any specific treatment in the Asian nation.
