Alcaraz to miss Davis Cup finals due to injury

MADRID — Carlos Alcaraz will once again be unable to achieve his aspiration of clinching the Davis Cup for Spain.

The top-ranked Alcaraz expressed his sorrow on Tuesday as he announced his withdrawal from the Davis Cup finals in Italy due to a hamstring issue. He mentioned that doctors advised him to make this decision.

«I’m deeply saddened to share that I can’t compete for Spain in the Davis Cup in Bologna,» Alcaraz shared on X. «I have swelling in my right hamstring, and the medical advice is not to participate.»

Jiri Lehecka and Jakub Mensik were the ones who ousted the United States in the qualifying round in September.

On Sunday, Alcaraz had already claimed the year-end No. 1 ranking before being defeated by Jannik Sinner 7-6 (4), 7-5 in the ATP Finals. He also achieved the No. 1 ranking in 2022, becoming the youngest ever at 19.

This year, he triumphed at the French Open and US Open, accumulating six Grand Slam titles.
