A pair of extra-time goals from Kieran Tierney and Kenny McLean gave Scotland a 4-2 win over Denmark on the last day of UEFA qualifying and a spot in the World Cup for the first time since 1998.
Scott McTominay opened the scoring Tuesday at Hampden Park with a superb bicycle kick goal three minutes into the match, but Rasmus Hojlund levelled the score to dampen the hopes of Scotland, who needed a win to secure top spot in Group C and an automatic bid.
After Lawrence Shankland and Patrick Dorgu traded goals in the second half, Tierney and McLean stepped up with a pair of outrageous goals to send the home crowd into delirium as Steve Clarke’s side came out victorious.
The result means Denmark, who had led the group going into the day, will enter the 16-team UEFA playoff in search of one of four additional spots at next summer’s tournament in the United States, Mexico and Canada.
The winner of the match will secure the Group C automatic World Cup spot.
