Giants QB Dart still in protocol, out vs. Lions

New York Giants quarterback Jaxson Dart continues to be in the concussion protocol and will miss the game on Sunday against the Detroit Lions, interim coach Mike Kafka informed reporters on Friday.

With Dart unavailable, Jameis Winston will take the field for his second consecutive start, while Russell Wilson will be in the backup role.

Dart had participated as a limited player in practices on Wednesday and Thursday, but he did not advance enough to be deemed fit for play.

«He’s simply in the protocol. He’s navigating through that stage of recovery,» Kafka stated. «Given the testing and outcomes, we are ruling him out this week.»

Dart exited the Giants’ match against the Chicago Bears on November 9 after sustaining a blow to the head, subsequently missing last week’s game against the Green Bay Packers. He has been assessed for a concussion four times this season, including during the preseason, while employing an aggressive running style that has positioned him as one of the top running quarterbacks in the NFL, with 317 rushing yards and seven touchdowns while averaging 5.6 yards per carry.

In his last outing, Winston completed 19 of 29 passes for 201 yards and added a rushing touchdown, but he also threw an interception during the 27-20 defeat to the Packers, contributing to the Giants’ current 2-9 record this season.

Contributions to this report were made by ESPN’s Jordan Raanan and The Associated Press.
