Sources: Whittingham, U-M agree to 5-year deal

Kyle Whittingham has confirmed a five-year contract to take on the role of head coach at Michigan, according to sources cited by ESPN’s Pete Thamel and Dan Wetzel.

The announcement is anticipated to be made later on Friday.

Whittingham, aged 66, recorded a 177-88 record over 21 seasons with Utah, including an undefeated 13-0 season in 2008. His credentials, featuring a win percentage of 66.8%, suggest he is likely to be honored in the College Football Hall of Fame in the future.

Earlier this month, it was revealed that he would be leaving the Utah program.

Whittingham had publicly stated that he was not retiring, humorously mentioning he was entering «the transfer portal.» The phrasing of his departure as «stepping down,» along with his remarks, pointed towards the possibility of pursuing another head coaching position.

Michigan dismissed Sherrone Moore on Dec. 10 following «credible evidence» of his involvement in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. Following his dismissal, Moore was arrested and subsequently charged with a third-degree felony for home invasion and two misdemeanors concerning visits to the staff member’s apartment.
