Washington Commanders unveil designs for new stadium

The Washington Commanders unveiled the initial designs for a new stadium, which is not set to open for another four years—offering a blend of historical significance and urban integration.

The designs depict a 70,000-seat dome featuring transparent elements that will showcase views of the U.S. Capitol and the Washington Monument. The exterior steel beams draw inspiration from RFK Stadium, which served as the team’s home from 1961 to 1996. Currently, the team plays about 20 miles away at Northwest Stadium in Landover, Maryland.

An insider familiar with the project indicated that the stadium’s interior aims to amplify crowd noise, as the organization seeks to reclaim the home-field advantage that was prevalent during their RFK years.

During their tenure at RFK, the team captured three Super Bowl titles, reached two other Super Bowls, and experienced merely five losing seasons across their last 26 years there. In stark contrast, they have achieved only eight winning seasons since relocating to the current venue at the onset of the 1997 season.

This nearly $4 billion construction is projected to be ready by the 2030 season. Owner Josh Harris and D.C. city officials have expressed intentions to bid for significant events such as the 2031 Women’s World Cup and a future Super Bowl.

The firm HKS has been appointed for the stadium’s design. HKS is known for designing iconic venues such as SoFi Stadium in Los Angeles, U.S. Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, and AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas. The stadium will serve as the focal point for a mixed-use development initiative.

The illustrations also include other constructions that are placeholders; at least 30% of the 180-acre site will be allocated for public recreational use.

Mark Clouse, president of the Washington team, stated that the renderings «are worthy of its extraordinary site along DC’s Monumental Axis and truly encapsulate the spirit and character of the District.»
