Wu Yize delivered an impressive display of potting to overwhelmingly defeat a struggling Xiao Guodong 6-0, advancing to the semi-finals of the Masters at Alexandra Palace.
The 22-year-old began the match with an outstanding 112 break, quickly adding a 93 and 60 to secure a strong 4-0 lead over his fellow countryman at the mid-session break.
While Wu’s performance was not without its flaws, he achieved his first ranking title at the International Championship last November.
Nonetheless, he benefited greatly from the subpar performance of his practice partner Xiao, who appeared to be a shadow of the player that triumphed over Mark Selby 6-2 in the opening round.
World number 11 Xiao had chances in the first frame, but after missing an easy blue to the middle and allowing his opponent to break the pack, it set the tone for the entire match, marked by significant misses and inadequate safety play that contributed heavily to his defeat.
Wu built a break of 84 to claim the fifth frame and concluded a dominant victory with a run of 97.
«It is undeniably a dream scenario for me since I was a child,» Wu shared with BBC Sport.
«I simply told myself to relish every moment of this match and give my best; clearly, it was a superb performance.»
Neil Robertson and Kyren Wilson will compete in the remaining quarter-final this evening at 19:00 GMT, with the victor set to face Wu.
