To paraphrase Mike Singletary, John Elway is from the old school. The Denver Broncos legend played in an era that was a bit more unforgiving, when quarterbacks didn’t have the heavenly protection they have today. So when the topic came up on his former teammate and fellow Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe’s Club Shay Shay, Elway had a few things to say.
Talking with Sharpe, Elway lamented the rule under which defensive players are penalized for touching the quarterback’s helmet. To Elway, it’s not an act of toughness within the league.

«I can’t stand that the QB gets hit in the head with a hand, and it’s a penalty,» Elway said. «I’m like, ‘Why does he have a helmet on?’ … I don’t remember any QBs going to the tent after they got hit with a hand.»

Elway is unfortunately in the position to be the old man on the porch, but he makes good points. Check out the whole clip for more context.
