Wrexham captain McClean exits, joins Derry City

The Wrexham Championship club has revealed that their captain has departed by mutual agreement and joined the Irish team Derry City.

At the age of 36, McClean became part of the Welsh team in 2023 — where he was a consistent starter in a squad that achieved back-to-back promotions from League Two to the Championship.

Throughout a prosperous two-and-a-half years, the winger accumulated 95 league appearances for Wrexham.

He is making a return to Derry City — who compete in the top division of Irish football — where he began his career with a three-year stint. He will reunite with his younger brother Patrick, who was recently announced as returning to the team on Friday.

Wrexham’s manager, Phil Parkinson, stated: «I had a productive discussion with Jimmy last week. The timing is appropriate for him and his family. He has always desired to settle back in his hometown and now has the chance to conclude his career there.»

From Wrexham to Macclesfield, the FA Cup is why we love football

«He has been a significant contributor to the club, and we have greatly appreciated collaborating with him. He has been a key player for us over the past few years, showcasing his drive, determination, mindset, and professionalism, and we wish him and his family the very best.»

McClean’s career also features Premier League experiences at Sunderland and West Bromwich Albion, and he earned 103 caps with the Republic of Ireland before retiring from international play in 2023.
