Thunder's Williams out at least 'couple of weeks'

Oklahoma City Thunder guard/forward Jalen Williams is dealing with a right hamstring strain and will be reassessed in «a couple of weeks,» marking a considerable blow for the reigning NBA champions.

The 6-foot-6 Williams was honored as an All-Star for the first time last season and earned spots on the all-defensive second team and All-NBA third team. He is currently averaging 16.8 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 5.6 assists this season, contributing to the Thunder’s impressive league-best 35-8 record.

He sustained his injury during the second quarter of Saturday’s 122-120 defeat against Miami. At that time, the team reported he was experiencing right thigh discomfort, although he appeared to grasp his right hamstring while limping off the court.

On Monday, the Thunder announced they would «assess Jalen Williams’ recovery regarding his right hamstring strain in a couple of weeks.»

Williams had previously missed the initial month of the season due to recovery from wrist surgery. He sustained that injury last season and played through pain during the Thunder’s championship run. Returning in late November after missing preseason and the first month of this season, he started in all 24 games he participated in before his recent injury.

Ajay Mitchell is expected to shoulder much of the responsibility. The second-year guard has emerged as one of the best reserves in the league this season, averaging 14.2 points, 3.5 rebounds, and 3.6 assists per game.
