The former midfielder, now 44, had enjoyed a successful spell managing Bayer Leverkusen before moving to Real Madrid last season. However, his stint in Madrid failed to live up to expectations, and his contract was terminated prematurely.
Since then, Alonso has been without a club, weighing up various opportunities. Liverpool, who are considering a departure for Arne Slot, see him as the ideal candidate to steady the ship. The Spanish coach, who played at Anfield from 2004 to 2009 and made 210 appearances, has expressed his readiness to return to an environment he knows well, where he left a significant mark on the club’s history.
