Fresh speculation from Germany suggests Sunderland have identified Borussia Mönchengladbach’s Jonas Omlin as a potential winter recruit. According to Saturday’s edition of Bild, relayed via Sport Witness, the Black Cats are monitoring the 32-year-old goalkeeper.
Omlin to the Stadium of Light? Swiss Shot-Stopper Linked with Black Cats Switch
He currently finds himself frozen out at Borussia-Park. Omlin was once the club captain and undisputed number one. However, he has endured a tough 2025/26 campaign. The Swiss international currently lacks a single minute of competitive action under Gerardo Seoane.

The report indicates that Gladbach sporting director Rouven Schröder is looking to trim the squad this January. He views high-earners like Omlin as prime candidates to move on. Omlin has less than 18 months remaining on his contract, which runs until June 2027.
So, the Bundesliga side seem desperate to get his salary off the books. Bild notes that a move to the Premier League almost happened last summer. Leicester City showed interest then, but the deal fell through. That left the Swiss international stuck in footballing limbo.
Now, Sunderland could offer him a way out. The German publication specifically calls the Wearside club a realistic destination. It suggests talks could pick up speed before the window shuts. This depends on Omlin taking a pay cut to fit into Sunderland’s wage structure.

Sunderland’s goalkeeping situation has changed a lot. This follows their jump to the top flight last May. The summer arrival of Dutch talent Robin Roefs for €13.5m shook up the order. This move pushed local favourite Anthony Patterson to the bench. Roefs has been a star in goal. He has been a big part of the Black Cats’ climb into the Premier League’s top half.
Still, this success has caused a bit of a problem. Patterson is far too good to just sit around. He needs to get back on the pitch and find his rhythm through a loan move this month. Championship sides West Bromwich Albion or Millwall are currently linked with him.
If Patterson leaves, Regis Le Bris faces a lack of depth. Depending only on veteran Simon Moore or young academy kids would be a huge risk. This is especially true for a team trying to qualify for Europe. This is where Jonas Omlin makes a lot of sense. He has a great track record. He has captained a Bundesliga team and played for Switzerland in major tournaments.
Omlin offers a reliable, experienced set of hands to back up Roefs. The market offers a low-risk chance for sporting director Kristjaan Speakman. Since Omlin hasn’t been playing, his price tag has reportedly dropped to around €1.5m. His lack of match fitness is still a worry. Even so, signing the Swiss goalkeeper would let Patterson develop elsewhere while keeping the Black Cats’ defence safe for the rest of the season.
