Bills add help at receiver, sign veteran Cooks

BUFFALO, N.Y. — The Bills have bolstered their receiving corps by signing veteran Brandin Cooks to the active roster on Tuesday.

Cooks was released by the New Orleans Saints on Saturday and successfully cleared waivers on Monday. According to Saints coach Kellen Moore, he requested his release, a process that unfolded over the last week.

Recently, the Bills have promoted receiver Gabe Davis from the practice squad for the last two games. Additionally, the team signed receiver/returner Mecole Hardman this month; however, he has since been placed on injured reserve due to a calf injury following a fumble during his punt return in his debut game in Week 11.

Second-year receiver Keon Coleman has been a healthy scratch for the last two games due to initial disciplinary issues. The Bills are on the verge of not having a 1,000-yard receiver for the second consecutive year, with tight end Dalton Kincaid currently leading the team with four receiving touchdowns, despite appearing in only eight games this season.

This season, the Bills’ offense has struggled, scoring fewer than 20 points in all three of their road losses, and they will face Pittsburgh on Sunday (4:25 p.m. ET, CBS). They are averaging 32.5 points per game at home, while only managing 21.8 on the road.

Bills general manager Brandon Beane noted after the trade deadline that efforts were made to acquire additional players, but no deals materialized.

Cooks, age 32, was originally a first-round draft choice by the Saints in 2014 and has accumulated 729 receptions for 9,697 yards and 60 touchdowns over his 12-season career.

This marks his second tenure with the Saints, having previously played for the New England Patriots, Los Angeles Rams, Houston Texans, and Dallas Cowboys.

This season, Cooks recorded 19 catches for 165 yards and no touchdowns in 10 games with the Saints.
