Ex-Dolphins safety says 'nobody understood' DC Anthony Weaver's scheme

Jordan Poyer’s one year stint with the Miami Dolphins didn’t go as planned for either party. The safety recorded zero sacks, zero forced fumbles, and zero interceptions in 2024.

Now the 34-year old is back with the Buffalo Bills, where he’ll likely wrap up his NFL career.

It’s safe to say Poyer won’t be bringing any warm memories of his time in Miami into retirement. In May, he said «the team wasn’t very good» and he didn’t play well. In a recent interview with Tyler Dunne of GoLongTD, Poyer took it a step further.

“I didn’t understand our defense. Nobody understood our defense,» Poyer said. «I can understand concepts of how an offense is trying to attack us — but if I don’t know where the guy next to me knows where he’s supposed to go? It’s draining. It took a lot out of me. Mentally, physically, emotionally.”

Poyer’s inability to grasp Weaver’s defense may come as a surprise to the coach, who defended the poor play of the safety. The defensive coordinator frequently pointed to Poyer’s intelligence as the reason he was still a valuable member of the Dolphins secondary.

«I don’t know exactly what [Poyer’s] numbers are or where in the narrative that he’s failing in terms of coverage because there’s so many other things that he does in terms of just getting people in the right positions that he doesn’t get credited for,» Weaver said last year. «So there is a cerebral part of the game particularly at that position which is incredibly important and he has graduate level honors in that.»

In spite of Poyer’s claim that «nobody understood» the scheme in 2024, the Dolphins defense finished No. 4 in yards allowed.
