Eye of the Tiger Management’s Camille Estephan claims that the IBF has ordered Canelo Alvarez to face top contender Osleys Iglesias for the super middleweight title Terence Crawford left behind. Jake Donovan clarifies that the IBF “has submitted invitations to enter negotiations,” giving the pair three days to accept or decline.
As a finer mind than I would say, this one’s exploding in the hangar. Alvarez (63-3-2, 39 KO) has publicly stated that he doesn’t intend to return until September, and even if that weren’t the case, I cannot fathom him taking on a high0risk, low-reward up-and-comer like Iglesias (14-0, 13 KO). I would put quite a few American dollars on the bet that Alvarez will instead wait for the super middleweight title picture to reassemble itself, then target either a low-hanging fruit like the winner of Armando Resendiz vs Edgar Berlanga or someone like Hamzah Sheeraz who would get Turki to open his wallet.
Iglesias sits at no. 1 in the most recent rankings after pummeling Vladimir Shishkin in a final eliminator, while Canelo’s at no. 3. Then come Jaime Munguia, the freshly defeated Callum Simpson, Sheeraz, Pavel Silyagin, and Simon Zachenhuber. Any bets?
