Vergil Ortiz’s lead trainer Robert Garcia takes some time to talk to Fight Hub TV about his thoughts on the ongoing delay in finalizing what should be a clear fight to make against Jaron ‘Boots’ Ennis. Here, Garcia says that it’s really not either fighter that’s holding things up, but just the standard boxing politics and business that often stands in the way. Hear what Garcia had to say on the subject below before also touching on the upcoming Teofimo Lopez vs Shakur Stevenson fight.
Garcia on the dragging negotiations for Boots vs Ortiz
“I know Vergil. Vergil’s a warrior, he’ll fight anybody,” Garcia said. “And he wants the Boots fight, he wants to fight the best in the division, he wants to fight for a world title if possible. It’s just promoters, Matchroom, Golden Boy, managers also. It’s a process. A lot of people in boxing think ‘oh those two should fight so make it happen.’ No, it’s not that easy. It takes weeks, months of negotiations to finalize a fight. I don’t like it. I like to go straight out ‘let’s make it happen, f-ck it, let’s do it’…That’s the way I like to work.
“But in this case you have two of the top promoters who also compete against each other, who is going to be the main promoter — all that has a lot to do with it, too. I think the fighters deserve a big payday, it’s a huge fight. I think it’s one of the fights that people are more excited about for this year. There’s other fights that are great but this is one of the top two or three fights in the whole year that people want to see, ‘cause it is that big of a fight.”
“It’s a fight where we’re going to see talent from both but we also have to see heart, who has that heart to become The Man. I think that fight’s going to be about who’s smarter, who plays the better cards and who doesn’t make mistakes, because it’s going to be one of those fights where we might not have too much action but we’re all going to be standing up because we want to see who’s going to land and who’s going to be the one to find those punches to land.”
