Jan. 5 (UPI) — Manchester United fired coach Ruben Amorim, the Red Devils announced Monday.
The Red Devils cited their sixth-place status in the Premier League in their reasoning for what they called a «reluctant» decision. Darren Fletcher was named interim coach.

«The club would like to thank Ruben for his contribution to the club and wishes him well for the future,» the Red Devils said.
Amorim assumed his role as head coach of the Red Devils in November 2024, replacing interim coach Ruud van Nistelrooy. Erik ten Hag coached the Red Devils from 2022 to October 2024.
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, Jose Mourinho, Louis van Gaal and David Moyes were among the Red Devils’ other managers after longtime boss Sir Alex Ferguson stepped down in 2013.
The Red Devils went 11-18-9 for a 15th place Premier League finish in 2024-25. Their 42 points from that campaign were their fewest since relegation in 1973-74. They went just 2-3-1 through their first six Premier League matches of 2025-26.

Amorim’s dismissal came less than 24 hours after he spoke about the potential end of his tenure during a news conference.
«It’s going to be like this for 18 months or when the board decide to change,» Amorim told reporters. «That was my point, I want to finish with that. I’m not going to quit. I will do my job until another guy is coming here to replace me.»
The Red Devils (8-5-7), who won just one of their last five games, earned a 1-1 draw with Leeds United on Sunday in Leeds. They sit behind Chelsea (8-5-7) and fourth-place Liverpool (10-6-4).
Arsenal (15-2-3), Manchester City (13-4-3) and Aston Villa (13-4-3) lead the Premier League standings.
The Red Devils will face 19th place Burnley (3-14-3) in another Premier League match at 3:15 p.m. EST Wednesday in Burnley.
