Manuel Neuer says he’s taking time to decide Bayern Munich future

This weekend brought about the annual club fan visits for a handful of the Bayern Munich players and staff members as the winter break period halts to a close and the Bundesliga champions prep for the start of the second half of the season. The January transfer window is also open, but the club’s front office has said more than once not to expect too much activity from the German Rekordmeister in the transfer market as sporting director Christoph Freund has expressed how pleased the club’s hierarchy is with the current status of the squad.

Nonetheless, much like last season, there are still a handful of key contracts that need to be sorted out before the end of this season; namely Dayot Upamecano and Manuel Neuer. For the French center back, there are still a handful of details that need to get hashed out behind the scenes before they reach a resolution, but for Neuer, things aren’t as complicated.

Speaking on his contract situation, which his current contract expires this summer, Neuer explained that he’s not in any rush to decide on his future and that he’s going to take his time. “I’m positive about the whole thing. But I want to wait and see how things develop over the next few months… I’ll make a final decision at the end of March or beginning of April,” Bayern’s keeper explained at his fan club visit (Sky Germany’s Torben Hoffmann via @iMiaSanMia).

There is some flexibility with Neuer because an extension would only be for another year and the club already has Jonas Urbig, who they brought in from FC Köln last winter to eventually take over for Neuer as the number one keeper at the club. Things didn’t quite work out at Bayern for Daniel Peretz and Sven Ulreich also missed a lot of last season due to personal matters. For Neuer, a lot of his future will be dictated by his health and fitness, his performances the remainder of this season, and how he personally feels.

Neuer was also absent for Bayern’s final Bundesliga match of 2025 for the 4-0 win at Heidenheim due to an injury. He confirmed that he will be ready to go for Bayern’ opening Bundesliga match of the new year on the 11th of the month against VfL Wolfsburg. “I’m confident I’ll be in goal against Wolfsburg,” he stated.
