Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield directed a jab at new Atlanta Falcons head coach Kevin Stefanski in a social media update this Tuesday evening.
Stefanski previously coached Mayfield while he was with the Cleveland Browns from 2018 to 2021. In his post, Mayfield remarked that he was «Still waiting on a text/call» from Stefanski after being «shipped» away «like a piece of garbage.»
«Looking forward to seeing you twice a year, Coach,» Mayfield concluded.
Failed is quite the reach pal. Still waiting on a text/call from him after I got shipped off like a piece of garbage. Can’t wait to see you twice a year, Coach. https://t.co/jUUsYkvlOC

This tweet was a reaction to a post by an Atlanta Journal-Constitution journalist who claimed that Mayfield had «failed» in Cleveland.
«Failed is quite the reach pal,» added Mayfield.
In his time with the Browns, Mayfield played a crucial role in leading the team to the playoffs in 2020, but both he and Stefanski faced their share of challenges during their tenure in Cleveland. After the Browns acquired quarterback Deshaun Watson in the 2022 offseason and extended his contract, Mayfield sought a trade.
The team subsequently traded Mayfield to the Carolina Panthers in exchange for a fifth-round selection. Unfortunately, his time at Carolina was also rough, resulting in a request for his release, which led him to the Los Angeles Rams for a brief stint in late 2022. Mayfield later joined the Buccaneers in 2023, where he has seen considerable success, steering the team to two NFC South championships, although they fell short of the playoffs this season with a record of 8-9.
Most recently, the Atlanta Falcons announced the hiring of Stefanski as their new head coach on Saturday. Stefanski, a two-time AP Coach of the Year, was let go by the Browns earlier this month following a disappointing 8-26 record over his last two seasons. The Falcons had parted ways with coach Raheem Morris, making the position available.
