Misrepresented Penix comment draws coach's ire

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. — Atlanta Falcons head coach Raheem Morris expressed his frustration over a distorted viral video featuring quarterback Michael Penix Jr., describing the entire situation as «a joke» that «disappoints» him regarding online behavior.

In the video from his Wednesday press conference, Penix mentions his fiancée and former coaches as his support system. However, some who shared this segment misinterpreted it, suggesting that Penix lacks support from the Falcons coaches or players, an insinuation that has circulated widely on social media in recent days.

«Stop searching for things on a young man,» Morris said on Friday. «He doesn’t need this. It is what it is. But all of these actions from people don’t impact this place.

«I just feel sorry for the kid. I don’t want him dealing with irrelevant issues or false narratives. … Let him focus on his challenges, like converting third downs. Let’s address that instead of fabricating issues that aren’t there.»

Penix was asked on Friday for clarification regarding his remarks during the press conference but opted not to elaborate, stating that everyone within the Falcons organization is aware of the reality.

Morris indicated that he and Penix were joking about the matter during practice this week. He highlighted that Penix has support from offensive coordinator Zac Robinson, quarterbacks coach D.J. Williams, offensive passing game coordinator/wide receivers coach T.J. Yates, and senior offensive assistant Ken Zampese to rely on, noting that Robinson, Williams, and Yates all have quarterbacking experience. Morris also acknowledged the role of veteran quarterback Kirk Cousins, who is serving as Penix’s backup.

Williams mentioned that he communicates more with Penix and the other quarterbacks than he does with his own children. He asserted that he didn’t feel the need to address the viral video with Penix.

«To be honest, I don’t even pay attention to it,» Williams remarked. «As long as we know the truth. Everything else is just background noise.»

Penix has had a mixed first full season as the starting quarterback for the Falcons, completing 58.8% of his passes, which amounts to 1,807 yards, nine touchdowns, and three interceptions. His 53.6 QBR ranks 19th in the NFL.

The Falcons (3-6) are on a four-game losing streak as they prepare for a home matchup against the rival Carolina Panthers on Sunday.

Running back Bijan Robinson stated that he talks to Penix «every single day,» discussing how the media can exaggerate a clip and «blow it way out of proportion.»

«Everyone here is committed to helping,» Robinson noted. «Ultimately, we want to see each other succeed. The external world will attempt to create division amongst us, so we need to maintain our solidarity, which will carry us through.»
