Reinier de Ridder Reveals The Biggest Issue He Saw in Khamzat Chimaev’s UFC Title Win

Leading UFC middleweight contender Reinier De Ridder has a slight critique regarding Khamzat Chimaev’s commanding performance against former champion Dricus Du Plessis at UFC 319. Although the Dutch ex-ONE MMA champion expressed admiration for Chimaev’s authoritative display, he offered one point of feedback for the Chechen champion.

“One point of criticism regarding what Khamzat executed was that he appeared to avoid taking many risks. He did find himself stuck in that crucifix. Hats off to Dricus, who buried his head into the shoulder, which restricted his range. But if I had to state a single critique, it would be that, despite the level of control Hamza had, he could have taken more risks. He controlled the fight more than he inflicted damage or actively pursued submissions. I get that he aimed to minimize risks, but I would have preferred to see him engage more with ground and pound; however, the referee’s actions were completely flawed. Mark Gard’s decision to stand them up was very poor. I believe this was not a suitable approach because Hamza maintained control. He was delivering punches, he was making efforts. I think there shouldn’t be any standups. I’m of the opinion that it’s part of the sport. Just get up. It wasn’t as if Khamzat was inactive just because Dricus couldn’t rise. I found those standups baffling.”

Reinier De Ridder faces one last challenge before his match with Chimaev.

Nonetheless, prior to Reinier De Ridder having the opportunity to challenge the champion, he must first overcome the relentless up-and-comer in the division, Anthony Hernandez. Hernandez’s ascent has been meteoric, marked by his unparalleled work rate in the entire middleweight category. He recently delivered a severe beating to Roman Dolidze, leading both fighters to eye the top contender spot, as they both seek a chance to challenge the new monarch of the middleweight realm.
