Sources: AD out several months for hand surgery

Dallas Mavericks star Anthony Davis is anticipated to have surgery to fix ligament damage in his left hand, which will keep him out for several months, as per ESPN sources.

Following the revelation of the seriousness of Davis’ hand injury on Friday, the Mavericks have rekindled trade discussions regarding Davis with several interested teams, according to sources. If he were to be traded to a playoff contender — such as previously interested squads like the Toronto Raptors and Atlanta Hawks — the timeline could facilitate Davis’s return during the playoff season while allowing him to establish himself for the long term elsewhere, providing the prospective next franchise of the 10-time All-Star with a multiyear window at a reduced trade cost.

Davis sustained his hand injury while defending Utah’s Lauri Markkanen on a drive during the Mavericks’ road defeat to the Jazz on Thursday, where Davis recorded 21 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and one block in 35 minutes of play.

A range of injuries have limited Davis to just 29 regular season contests in a Mavericks uniform since he was traded to Dallas from Los Angeles as the key piece in the controversial deal for Luka Doncic in early February.

The Mavs, focusing on the long-term perspective while developing around Rookie of the Year contender Cooper Flagg, have a record of 10-10 with Davis on the court and 5-15 without him this season.

In 20 games this season, Davis is averaging 20.4 points, 11.1 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.7 blocks.
