Sources: AD won’t play until OK from Mavs owner

DALLAS — Mavericks owner Patrick Dumont has asked for medical information to confirm that Anthony Davis is not in jeopardy of worsening his left calf strain before he gives the go-ahead for the 10-time All-Star big man to make his comeback, as reported by sources to ESPN on Wednesday.

Davis is marked as questionable for the home game on Wednesday against the Phoenix Suns. This is the third straight game he has this status on the injury report, but he will miss his seventh consecutive game.

He initially aimed for a return in Saturday’s away match against the Washington Wizards, but a disagreement arose between Mavs health and performance head Johann Bilsborough and Davis’ personal medical team regarding the wisdom of that, sources revealed. Davis was held back after Dumont preferred to follow Bilsborough’s cautionary approach, as per sources.

Dumont’s role in the decision significantly displayed his lost faith in general manager Nico Harrison, who was dismissed Tuesday morning. Harrison had supported Davis in his return, sources noted.

Concerns linger regarding Davis potentially sustaining a serious injury if the calf strain is not fully healed, echoing the case of Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton, who tore his Achilles tendon in Game 7 of the NBA Finals.

Davis has participated in just 14 games, along with a couple of play-in contests, since joining Dallas as the centerpiece in the debated Luka Doncic trade that angered the Mavericks’ fan community.

Davis was recuperating from an abdominal injury at the point of the trade and hurried back for the team’s first home game following the transaction, incurring a related adductor strain after excelling in the first half of a Feb. 8 victory over the Houston Rockets. That adductor strain kept him out for the following six weeks.
