USMNT’s McKennie subjected to racist harassment

Weston McKennie, midfielder for the United States men’s national team, faced racial abuse following Juventus’ 2-0 season-opening victory against Parma in Serie A, according to the Italian club on Sunday.

Juventus released a statement on social media indicating that McKennie was subjected to «discriminatory racist comments by certain individuals in the away section» while he was cooling down with his teammates on the field.

«Juventus vehemently denounces this occurrence and any manifestation of racism, and will guarantee complete cooperation with the sporting justice authorities to identify those accountable,» Juventus stated in the announcement.

Canada striker Jonathan David scored during his Serie A debut for Juventus.

In 2023, Fiorentina received a suspended partial stadium ban after their fans aimed racist and discriminatory chants at McKennie and various Juventus players.

Sunday’s occurrence is the most recent in a sequence of racism claims in European football.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino characterized two instances of alleged racial abuse that tarnished German Cup matches as «unacceptable» last week.
