5-star PSG thrash Marseille in Le Classique

Ousmane Dembélé‘s double helped Paris Saint-Germain claim a thumping 5-0 victory in their Le Classique meeting with Marseille at the Parc des Princes.

The France forward starred for PSG with two first-half goals and they took control after the break with Facundo Medina‘s own goal along with efforts from Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Lee Kang-In wrapping up three points.

PSG will stay top of the table, two points ahead of second-placed Lens, but Marseille drop out of the top three after they were leapfrogged by Lyon following their win over Nantes on Saturday.

Both sides have already met twice this season, with Marseille triumphing 1-0 in the reverse league fixture back in September, but PSG claimed a penalty shootout win to clinch the Champions Trophy at the beginning of January.

The Parisian side threatened from kick-off when Désiré Doué‘s strike was blocked and Bradley Barcola‘s effort flew wide of the upright and their quick start was rewarded in the 12th minute when Nuno Mendes found Dembele, who smashed the ball home.

Amine Gouiri almost equalised moments later, but Matvey Safonov was equal to his attempt and another flurry of attacks from the visitors saw Mason Greenwood‘s strike blocked and Quinten Timber hit an effort wide.

Doue’s shot was held by Jeffrey de Lange before Dembélé struck again in the 37th-minute with a fantastic move weaving into the box from the right flank and past the Marseille defence before firing home at the near post.

The forward nearly bagged his hat trick before the break, but could only blast the ball wide as PSG took a two-goal advantage into the break.

Luis Enrique’s side enjoyed a bright start to the second half when De Lange was called into action to deny João Neves and Doue hit the woodwork.

Both players went close again before Marseille had an opportunity when Greenwood sent a cross into the box for Igor Paixão, but his header was saved by Safonov.

PSG hit the post again when Barcola’s strike smashed off the upright and Senny Mayulu sent a shot just wide.

However, the Parisian side extended their advantage further in the 64th minute when Medina turned the ball into his own net.

Only two minutes later PSG struck again when Dembélé played a cross into Kvaratskhelia, who blasted the ball into the bottom left corner.

A miserable evening for Marseille was completed when substitute Lee Kang-In hit PSG’s fifth in the 74th-minute with a cool low finish into the corner to wrap up the three points.
