Two of the premier programs in the Texas 6A Division II bracket square off with a trip to the championship game at stake.

Southlake Carroll puts its undefeated season on the line against playoff-tested DeSoto in a University Interscholastic League 6A DII semifinal, which takes place Saturday afternoon in Mansfield.

The Dragons, who played in last season’s 6A DII title game, come in with a perfect 14-0 record. All 14 wins have come by double digits, with the closest margin of victory 18 points, when the Dragons prevailed 49-31 against Prosper two weeks ago in the regional semifinals.

Last week, SLC downed Denton Guyer, 51-19, in the regional finals.

As for DeSoto, the Eagles are itching to get back to Arlington after missing out last season, falling in the regional finals coming off of back-to-back state titles in 2022-23.

They started this season 0-2 before turning things around, reeling off wins in 11 of their next 12 games, with the only loss in that span coming to Duncanville, which is playing in the 6A Division I semifinals on Saturday.

Last week, DeSoto outlasted Willis, 60-41, in the regional final. The Eagles have scored at least 56 points in its four playoff wins so far.

Friday’s semifinal winner plays the winner of the other semifinal, between defending champion Austin Vandegrift and Houston Sheldon King, which is taking place Saturday night in Waco, at next week’s UIL State championship round in Arlington.

FOURTH QUARTER

– Southlake Carroll turns the ball over on downs. DeSoto takes over with less than five minutes to go.

– TOUCHDOWN DeSOTO. And the Eagles take the lead on their next possession, as SaRod Baker takes it in from a yard out. A huge second half for the tailback so far and DeSoto is now up by seven. (DeSoto, 51-44 | 6:42, 4th) 

– TOUCHDOWN DeSOTO. Back come the Eagles, and SaRod Baker runs it in from 23 yards out, and the PAT ties it right back up again. (44-44 | 10:46, 4th)

– TOUCHDOWN SOUTHLAKE CARROLL. Wow, and just like that, the Dragons are back in the lead. Davis Penn reels off a 59-yard sprint to the house just 11 seconds after DeSoto tied the score. Penn now with more than 200 yards rushing on the afternoon. (Southlake Carroll, 44-37 | 11:26, 4th) 

– PICK-SIX AND 2-POINT CONVERSION DeSOTO. Holy mackerel, the Eagles have come all the way back to tie it. Jordan Stevens returns an interception 85 yards for a pick-six, and then the Eagles get a game-tying two-point play. (37-37 | 11:37, 4th)

THIRD QUARTER

– DeSoto has the ball and goes for it on fourth down near midfield, but the Eagles get denied inside the final minute of the period.

– TOUCHDOWN AND 2-POINT CONVERSION DeSOTO. The Eagles are creeping much closer now. QB Legend Howell runs in a keeper from 28 yards out, and SaRod Baker adds a two-point run. It is now a one-score ballgame. (Southlake Carroll, 37-29 | 2:48, 3rd) 

– TOUCHDOWN SOUTHLAKE CARROLL. For the fourth time,  WR Blake Gunter finds the end zone, this time from 3 yards out. (Southlake Carroll, 37-21 | 5:10, 3rd)

– TOUCHDOWN DeSOTO. Eagles strike back, as Legend Howell throws a 56-yard TD pass to running back SaRod Baker. (Southlake Carroll, 30-21 | 9:30, 3rd) 

– FIELD GOAL SOUTHLAKE CARROLL. The Dragons add on to their lead as Gavin Strange, a Duke signee, connects from 42 yards out. (Southlake Carroll, 30-14 | 10:06, 3rd)

– TOUCHDOWN SOUTHLAKE CARROLL. Four TD throws now for the Dragons, the latest a 22-yard grab by Brody Knowles at the end of the opening half. The PAT was blocked. (Southlake Carroll, 27-14 | :00, 2nd)

– TOUCHDOWN SOUTHLAKE CARROLL. Wow, a hat trick already for Dragon WR Blake Gunter. He catches his third TD on the day, from 6 yards out, and now has 110 yards on four catches. (Southlake Carroll, 21-14 | 4:16, 2nd) 

– TOUCHDOWN DeSOTO. Eagles tie things up as receiver and USC signee Ethan Feaster hauls in a 1-yard scoring reception. (14-14 | 6:26, 2nd) 

FIRST QUARTER

– TOUCHDOWN SOUTHLAKE CARROLL. Blake Gunter with his second TD reception on the day, hauling in a 44-yard strike from Angelo Renda, and the Dragons have their first lead. (Southlake Carroll, 14-7 | :15, 1st) 

– TOUCHDOWN SOUTHLAKE CARROLL. Dragons respond by tying things up. as WR Blake Gunter goes in for a 58-yard score. (7-7 | 4:05, 1st)
