According to sources, the New York Knicks will not be raising a banner at Madison Square Garden to commemorate their NBA Cup victory, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.
While Knicks head coach Mike Brown had suggested a banner would be raised, a decision against it was taken soon after the Knicks triumphed over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday evening.
The Los Angeles Lakers and Milwaukee Bucks both have banners displayed in their arenas. The Knicks have not put up a team banner since they captured the Eastern Conference title in 1999.
«There are many positives about it,» Brown remarked afterward. «However, the biggest positive is the chance to hang a banner in MSG, the league’s most iconic venue.»
The majority of players appeared relatively apathetic regarding the situation. Karl-Anthony Towns mentioned that the Knicks would acknowledge the achievement for one night before returning to their regular routine. They are set to face the Indiana Pacers on Thursday.
Jalen Brunson, who received the tournament MVP award, seemed to reflect Towns’ views, as the Knicks aim to compete in the NBA Finals for the first time since 1999.
«I don’t believe we’re having a parade,» he stated. «We’re going to relish this moment. But once we leave tomorrow, it’s back to business.»
