Luton Town’s head coach Jack Wilshere called on his players to halt the concession of «cheap goals» following a thrilling 3-2 loss in League One against struggling Reading.
The home team surged ahead with a 2-0 advantage thanks to goals from Lewis Wing, via a penalty kick, and Jack Marriott, but the Hatters equalized through Jordan Clark and Nigel Lonwijk.
However, home substitute Kelvin Ehibhatiomhan struck the decisive goal in the 78th minute, putting an end to Luton’s unbeaten streak of four league matches.
Wilshere remarked: «It’s irritating because when you perform like that and have command of the match, while asking players to execute plans effectively, we’re faced with the same issue.»
«We continuously allow cheap goals to slip through. It’s crucial that we learn these moments can be pivotal.»
«I’ve experienced this as a player; when coming back into the game, there’s a natural sense of relief.»
«Yet, we must control that and acknowledge it. We were the only team destined to secure victory in this match.»
«We came here seeking three points, but we leave with none.»
Reading advanced from 18th place in the standings—only above the relegation zone on goal difference—to 14th.
«I was thrilled with the outcome and pleased with our response to a negative situation [Luton’s two goals],» said Royals manager Leam Richardson. «However, I wasn’t entirely satisfied with how it unfolded. I thought we controlled the game at 2-0. Nevertheless, we recognize the youth of our squad and some young players who are gaining experience.»
«We’ve discussed the importance of consistency in our performances over the past week or so. We must translate that consistency into our results.»
«Tonight, the players who took to the field [the substitutes] significantly elevated their performance levels. That aspect is essential.»
