Derrick Moore becomes Michigan football’s first Citrus Bowl opt-out

Despite all of the turmoil in Ann Arbor, the players have mostly galvanized, and Michigan football is expected to be at close to full strength when it takes on Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on December 31. However, the Wolverines will be down at least one starter, it now appears.

Michigan edge rusher Derrick Moore is one of the few players who don’t really have a decision to make as he’s out of eligibility and a surefire NFL player. The only decision he had to make was if he was going to play against the Longhorns at the end of the month. And, not unexpectedly, Moore officially declared for the NFL draft on Saturday.

Moore is the first opt-out of the game to go public. With him out, the expectation is that TJ Guy and likely Cameron Brandt, Dom Nichols, and the other EDGEs will work in his place.

It’s not clear at this juncture if fellow edge rusher-outside linebacker Jaishawn Barham will play or if he’ll opt out for the draft.
