Bayer Leverkusen 0-3 Bayern Munich (Frauen-Bundesliga): Full-time observations

Bayern Munich is one match away from the winter break but the last one will be a stiff road test in the Frauen-Bundesliga against sixth-placed Bayer Leverkusen.

It has been a busy period for the Frauen, but Champions League success — qualifying straight to the quarterfinals — and a strong league position should make for a festive holiday season. The Bavarians are still six points atop the league, with regular challengers VfL Wolfsburg looking in raggedly inconsistent form despite not being all that far behind.

Leverkusen have put in a solid campaign with seven wins and five losses to one draw, but are up and down as well. If Bayern brings its A-game, this should be a win to round off the year.

Prediction: Bayern wins 3-2. It gets just a little bit nippy at the end of what has been a real gauntlet, but not enough for the Bavarians to drop points.

It’s Bayern time.

Full-time: Leverkusen 0-3 FC Bayern

How did that scoreline happen? Bayern won two more penalties in the second half and converted both of them despite being put under pressure by Leverkusen early on. The hosts were in disbelief by the third one, with the sideline earning a yellow card for their protests. Let’s hope this isn’t a back-breaking result for them, because they don’t deserve it. Bayern, meanwhile, will gratefully take the additional +GD and of course the three points. It took a few moments of magic and a helping of luck — that second penalty should not have been given — but it goes down as an emphatic win.

Half-time: Leverkusen 0-1 FC Bayern

Lively display from the hosts so far with nothing to show for it. Fraziska Kett scores the game’s only goal with a gorgeous hit teed up by Jovana Damnjanović and later contributed to creating a danger situation in the box that resulted in a Bayern penalty. Pernille Harder, however, who won the penalty could not step up and convert. Still anyone’s game — it’s Leverkusen with the greater number of shots (6-4) as well as on target (3-2) despite Bayern dominating most other statistical categories, from ball possession to duels won. As long as the Bavarians let the hosts hang around, they could still drop points.

But when Bayern have the ball they move it with reassuring crispness, especially through Momoko Tanikawa. Looks likelier for Bayern to be doubling the advantage early in the second half than an equalizer.
