Bruce “Shu Shu” Carrington made a statement to end his fight with Carlos Castro, scoring a ninth round knockout on a combination that featured a series of right hands, winning the vacant WBC featherweight title.
Carrington (17-0, 10 KO) didn’t have it all his way in this fight, which was his first crack at a full world title as a professional. But the 28-year-old Brooklyn native delivered on the hype he’s gotten as a Top Rank prospect, stopping a game and competitive Castro (30-4, 14 KO) with a nice series of punches, having adjusted well after Castro definitely gave him some tough early rounds.
The official time of the knockout was 1:29 of round nine. Referee Charlie Fitch reached the count of 10 without Castro getting back to his feet.
Carrington has now fully solidified himself as a name to know at 126 lbs, and the world title will, of course, put a big target on him, as he brings something to the table now that every fighter will want, including fellow champions in the division.
“I told you, (Castro) is a dangerous guy. He got me on a shot that kinda buzzed me. He was tough through and through,” Carrington said. “It was a tough fight, but I expected it to be a tough fight and to finish strong.”
“When I got caught, I just had to stay calm, get back to boxing, and get my faculties together and get into a second groove. I think the second groove is what got me this victory.”
