Vítor Pereira: 'The league will punish the teams who make mistakes'

Nottingham Forest’s new manager Vítor Pereira has spoken to the press ahead of the midweek Europa League play-off against his former side, Fenerbahçe.

Naturally, the Portuguese coach was asked about the club and the problems that have led to so many managers being hired in a single season.

«I prefer to speak about the present and the future,» Pereira said. «It’s difficult season for the players because they have different methodologies and managers.

«I believe the reason why I accept this job is because I believe in the quality of the players, the potential of this club, the ambition of the president [Evangelos Marinakis]. This the best league, as I said before, in the world.

«I really believe in our work and together we can increase our level.»

Of course, Pereira comes into this having been the manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers where he initially lifted their fortunes before a torrid start to the 2025/26 campaign.

«I learned this is a league which we cannot make mistakes in – the mistakes will punish us. The league will punish the teams and the clubs who make mistakes.

«The high level of this league has conditions to compete and in a small detail you and lose. In a second you can lose and in a second you can win.»

Pereira was asked about his relationship with Marinakis having previously worked under him: «He is ambitious, he wants to win. Emotional, I know him very well.

«The conversation was about our time in Olympiacos. I remember the energy and the fire we created, in Greece there is a fire inside, they like to see the energy.

«He asked me to be myself, he liked the way when we worked together we won the league and cup.

«It was in the middle of the season and we created a good relationship. He trusts my work, I trust his personality. I think we need passion too.»

After their European trip, Forest have a difficult run of fixtures with the visit of Liverpool coming up before the return leg at home to Fenerbahçe. Games against Brighton and Manchester City follow that in early March.
