Baseball season is underway and Notre Dame faces an early-season test Saturday when it meets defending the national champion LSU Tigers at the Live Like Lou Jax College Baseball Classic in Jacksonville, Florida.

Unfortunately Friday night didn’t go as the Irish had planned, as they dropped their opening game of the invitational, falling 4-2 to UCF. Notre Dame’s early season record is now 2-2, not exactly the start it had hoped for. However, the great thing about baseball is that there is a quick turnaround, but a tough one for the Irish.

First pitch is scheduled for noon ET at VyStar Ballpark, the home of the Triple-A Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp. The Irish opened the season by taking two of three at Florida Atlantic, behind standout performances from Bino Watters, Jayce Lee and a deep pitching staff.

LSU looks to continue their success from last season and enter the weekend ranked near the top of every major poll after a 5-0 start. Saturday’s matchup also carries historical weight: the all-time series between Notre Dame and LSU is tied 5-5, and this will be the first neutral-site meeting between the programs. For the Irish, a victory over the defending champions could be a morale boost and give confidence to the team on a national stage.

Notre Dame will send in out Caden Crowell, as the freshman will get his second start of his career. The first one was short, just three innings, but the promise was there, as he didn’t all a run, struck out three, however did walk four batters. LSU is expected to counter with Cooper Moore, who went six innings allowing just one run on four hits with 11 strikeouts in his first start of the year against Milwaukee. The Irish hitters will need to be at their best to score runs against the talented righty.
