Who was released before the NFL cut-down deadline? We tracked roster trims to 53 players

The 2025 NFL season is set to commence next week, with the reigning Super Bowl champion Philadelphia Eagles hosting the Dallas Cowboys on Thursday, Sept. 4 (8:20 p.m. ET, NBC), prompting teams to finalize their rosters.

Among the key cuts, the Panthers released Hunter Renfrow, and there were several trades this week, highlighted by the Raiders acquiring QB Kenny Pickett from the Browns.

As teams formalize their cuts, our NFL Nation journalists will provide real-time updates on which players have been excluded from the roster.

NFC East

Major move: Given the uncertain condition of Micah Parsons for the opening game, James Houston (noted for one sack, three hurries, and two tackles for loss in 2024) likely benefited, as Dallas opted to include six pass rushers in their 53-man roster. Houston exhibited disruptive play in both practices and games, but the question remains—can he secure a spot on game day? The Cowboys are expected to reinstate Hakeem Adeniji as their swing tackle along with cornerback C.J. Goodwin to the roster as early as Wednesday, when they can place running back Phil Mafah (shoulder) and cornerback Caelen Carson (knee) on injured reserve/designated to return. — Todd Archer

Traded: OL Asim Richards (New Orleans)

Waived/released: OT Hakeem Adeniji, DL Tommy Akingbesote, LB Justin Barron, OL Nick Broeker, WR Jalen Brooks, DL Earnest Brown IV, OL Saahdiq Charles, OL Geron Christian, S Alijah Clark, OL La’el Collins, WR Jalen Cropper, RB Malik Davis, DT Denzel Daxon, TE Princeton Fant, TE Rivaldo Fairweather, CB C.J. Reserve/NFI: CB Shavon Revel Jr.

Major move: The Giants have released Tommy DeVito. This was anticipated and essentially guaranteed once they signed both Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston while drafting Jaxson Dart. DeVito was the fourth quarterback throughout the spring and summer, and the Giants wouldn’t retain four quarterbacks on the active roster. While there’s a chance DeVito could end up on the practice squad, it’s a slim one. However, he has other opportunities. The surprising aspect was Ihmir Smith-Marsette not being considered for the returner role; he returned a kickoff for a touchdown and had a punt return (though called back due to a penalty) and averaged nearly 35 yards per kickoff. It would’ve seemed he earned another chance, yet the Giants opted for Gunner Olszewski as their returner for the season’s start. — Jordan Raanan

Waived/released: QB Tommy DeVito, RB Dante Miller, RB Jonathan Ward, TE Greg Dulcich, TE Jermaine Terry II, CB Tre Hawkins III, CB Dee Williams, DL Elijah Chatman, DL Jeremiah Ledbetter, DL Jordon Riley, DL Cory Durden, DL Elijah Garcia, G Jake Kubas, OL Bryan Hudson, OT Stone Forsythe, K Jude McAtamney, OLB Trace Ford, OLB Tomon Fox, S Raheem Layne, S Makari Paige, WR Ihmir Smith-Marsette, WR Juice Wells Jr., WR Lil’Jordan Humphrey, WR Dalen Cambre, WR Da’Quan Felton

Major move: The acquisition of tackle Fred Johnson and quarterback Sam Howell enhances depth in crucial positions. No. 2 QB Tanner McKee has gained the organization’s confidence but has sustained a finger injury on his throwing hand late in training camp. Rookie Kyle McCord is still not ready for NFL action, prompting the Eagles to turn to Howell, who has 18 career starts. Johnson previously spent two seasons in Philadelphia before joining the Jaguars earlier this offseason. With no emerging candidates during camp this summer, he can immediately assume the swing tackle role during games. — Tim McManus

Major move: Washington made its most significant roster change last week by trading running back Brian Robinson Jr. to San Francisco. However, the Commanders’ noteworthy decision on Tuesday was to retain right guard Sam Cosmi on the physically unable to perform list. This indicates he will miss at least the first four weeks of the season as he continues rehabilitation from a torn right ACL sustained in the NFC divisional round in January. Nick Allegretti has stepped in during his absence. Washington remains optimistic about Cosmi’s recovery, yet it’s an injury that typically requires 9-12 months to heal.

Major move: UDFA wide receiver Jahdae Walker secured a spot on the Bears’ initial 53-man roster after a standout preseason, tying for the team lead with two touchdowns, including a game-winning TD in Kansas City. His contribution to special teams earned him the sixth wide receiver position. Meanwhile, despite struggling to improve his standing on the depth chart, former third-round selection Kiran Amegadjie was among the ten offensive linemen retained on the roster. Though he primarily operated as the third-string left tackle post-injury, GM Ryan Poles indicated they’re experimenting with Amegadjie at guard. — Courtney Cronin

Major move: Head coach Dan Campbell feels confident about his Detroit Lions roster entering the 2025 season, calling it his strongest group since he joined in 2021. However, there were certainly unexpected moves. After drafting rookie defensive end Ahmed Hassanein in the sixth round as the first Egyptian to enter the NFL, he was waived with an injury settlement due to a pectoral injury. Additionally, fan-favorite Dan Skipper, who was expected to play a role on the offensive line, was released, causing further surprise. The Lions still have three roster spots available, hinting at potential significant changes. — Eric Woodyard

Major move: A player who had not played his current position in the NFL until recently made the team, while a prior first-round selection and a three-time Super Bowl champion did not. This refers to Bo Melton, a receiver-turned cornerback, who made the roster. Conversely, linebacker Isaiah Simmons (No. 8 overall in 2020) and receiver/kick returner Mecole Hardman (former Super Bowl winner with the Chiefs) did not make the cut. Melton has participated in 22 games as a receiver over the last two years and transitioned to cornerback only during June’s minicamp. If that wasn’t surprising enough, an undrafted rookie making the roster shouldn’t be either. Defensive tackle Nazir Stackhouse maintained the 21-year streak for the Packers of having at least one undrafted free agent on the Week 1 roster, provided he suits up for the opener. — Rob Demovsky

Major move: The Vikings’ most significant choice to this point has been altering the quarterback depth behind new starter J.J. McCarthy. They traded presumptive No. 2 Sam Howell, replaced him with free agent Carson Wentz, released veteran Brett Rypien, and retained undrafted rookie Max Brosmer as part of their 53-man roster. There’s a common belief that debates over backup quarterbacks do not matter significantly since if the starter is injured, a team’s chances decrease regardless of the replacement. However, in the Vikings’ scenario, the backup quarterback will play for a team that the owners, Zygi and Mark Wilf, have invested over $350 million in cash to field. It’s essential to maintain a certain level of performance regardless of who takes the snaps. Additionally, the composition of a quarterback room with an inexperienced starter is critical. Can Wentz provide the veteran presence that McCarthy might require? — Kevin Seifert

Traded: CB Mekhi Blackmon, QB Sam Howell, DL Harrison Phillips

Major move: The Falcons placed starting right tackle Kaleb McGary on injured reserve Tuesday, which was anticipated. However, they did so without allowing him to return, indicating McGary will miss the full season due to a leg injury incurred last week in practice. He had served as the team’s starter at that position since being a first-round draft selection in 2019, and was expected to have an expanded 2025 role protecting the blindside of left-handed quarterback Michael Penix Jr. Storm Norton, his backup, is also expected to be sidelined for six to eight weeks following ankle surgery. Major move: The release of 2021 Pro Bowl receiver Hunter Renfrow, who was attempting a comeback from ulcerative colitis, will likely garner significant attention, particularly since the Panthers retained seven wide receivers. However, the more important decision involved keeping four tight ends: Ja’Tavion Sanders, Tommy Tremble, Mitchell Evans, and James Mitchell. This suggests uncertainty about Tremble’s readiness post-back surgery following a majority of missed camp time. Expect this number to adjust once things settle down. — David Newton

Major move: After a solid training camp, despite an injury, wide receiver Simi Fehoko was unexpectedly among the Cardinals’ cuts. He showed consistency during practice and made plays throughout the preseason. Veteran running back DeeJay Dallas, who played a pivotal role in Arizona’s special teams last season, was also released after a mixed preseason. However, the most significant decision was keeping first-round pick Walter Nolen III on PUP, meaning he cannot practice for at least the first four weeks of the season, and once his 21-day window opens after Week 4, he might miss up to three additional games. — Josh Weinfuss

Major move: The Rams moved on from inside linebacker Chris Paul Jr., a fifth-round pick in 2025. Paul faced some time out due to a calf injury during camp but participated in all three preseason games, even wearing the green dot in the first preseason match. The Rams opted to maintain four inside linebackers on their initial 53-man roster: Nate Landman, Omar Speights, Troy Reeder, and undrafted rookie Shaun Dolac. — Sarah Barshop

Major move: The most significant move for the Niners was the decision not to trade receiver Jauan Jennings, keeping him on the 53-man roster. Jennings has yet to make a comeback from a calf injury and has unresolved contract issues. The 49ers require his return to the field promptly, but a lucrative extension appears improbable. The team is thin at the position and needs Jennings ready for Week 1 to ensure the offense is close to full strength. Major move: The Seahawks cut Marquez Valdes-Scantling after failing to trade the veteran receiver and the remaining $2.5 million on his one-year deal. From a financial perspective, this was a challenging decision as he is guaranteed an additional $1.5 million beyond his $1.5 million signing bonus. Yet, competitively, it was their only feasible option in the absence of a trade. Seattle initially signed Valdes-Scantling as their WR3 to help compensate for some of the speed lost in the DK Metcalf trade. However, since he doesn’t participate in special teams, he couldn’t afford to drop further on the depth chart to secure his spot. Rookie fifth-round selection Tory Horton notably surpassed him over the summer, alongside Jake Bobo, Dareke Young, and Cody White, who all earned their spots on the 53 behind Jaxon Smith-Njigba and Cooper Kupp. — Brady Henderson

Mike Hilton’s release was surprising, given his previous starting experience. However, the Dolphins have been impressed with rookie Jason Marshall Jr. at the nickel cornerback position, positioning him as a likely Week 1 starter. Major move: The Patriots’ decision to draft LSU outside linebacker Bradyn Swinson in the fifth round, at the 146th overall spot, surprised many. Pass rushers with Swinson’s production (8.5 sacks) typically do not last until the fifth round. Thus, it was unexpected to see him among the cuts. Though undrafted OLB Elijah Ponder (Cal-Poly) established a role on defense and special teams, the Patriots seemed poised to retain both developing outside linebackers. Monitoring the potential of Swinson rejoining the practice squad will be key if he clears waivers. — Mike Reiss

Major move: Cincinnati decided to retain only eight offensive linemen in their initial cuts. Depth has been a significant concern, particularly at right guard. Players who managed to secure roster spots, such as safety PJ Jules and rookie defensive tackle Howard Cross, might be at risk as the team looks for additional depth through waivers following the initial cuts. Bengals coach Zac Taylor has not appointed a starting right guard but believes that person will emerge from the existing roster. Expect potential additions to that position and possibly at safety as well. — Ben Baby

Major move: The Browns traded quarterback Kenny Pickett to the Raiders on Monday for a 2026 fifth-round draft pick. Pickett was the first quarterback acquired by Cleveland in the offseason as they restructured their quarterback room, but a hamstring injury relegated him out of contention for QB1. Major move: The Colts’ surprise decision involved releasing 2023 second-round pick — and Indianapolis native — JuJu Brents. This move comes as a shock after Brents dealt with injuries over the last two seasons, participating in only 11 of a potential 34 games. He also missed considerable practice time in training camp due to a hamstring injury and was not seen as a fit for coordinator Lou Anarumo’s system. Major move: The Jaguars faced challenges in run defense in 2024 (132.6 yards per game allowed, which ranked 25th) and required significant enhancements on the defensive line, leading to the release of tackles Jordan Jefferson and Tyler Lacy, both previously fourth-round picks in 2024 and 2023, respectively. They opted for undrafted free agents Danny Striggow (Minnesota) and B.J. Green (Colorado). Major move: The most significant news was the release of wide receiver Xavier Restrepo. Despite being Miami’s all-time leading receiver in various categories and Cam Ward’s primary target, Restrepo signed with the Titans as an undrafted free agent. He started strong during OTAs and minicamp, but that momentum did not carry into training camp.
