Karl, 17, scores record-breaking Bayern UCL goal

MUNICH — Seventeen-year-old Lennart Karl received his inaugural Champions League start and capitalized on the opportunity.

Just five minutes into the match against Club Brugge on Wednesday, Karl became Bayern Munich‘s youngest goalscorer in Champions League history, surpassing a record previously held by Jamal Musiala.

Karl received a pass from Jonathan Tah in midfield, maneuvered past defender Brandon Mechele and advanced to the brink of the Brugge penalty area before unleashing a curving left-footed shot that found the net over goalkeeper Nordin Jackers.

Karl dashed to the corner flag to celebrate with a knee slide, while Bayern forward Harry Kane and midfielder Aleksandar Pavlovic hurried over to embrace their young teammate.

At 17 years and 242 days, Karl eclipses Musiala’s record, who was 121 days older when he found the net against Lazio in a round-of-16 match four years prior.

Karl sports the same shirt number, 42, that Musiala wore in that matchup.

This marks Karl’s first senior team goal in his 10th appearance for Bayern across all competitions, having made his debut at the Club World Cup with a 10-0 victory over Auckland City in June.
