Jude Bellingham expressed that netting a goal in Real Madrid‘s 1-0 victory in the Champions League over Juventus on Wednesday was a «wonderful feeling» after scoring for the first time this season.
Bellingham capitalized within the six-yard area after Vinícius Júnior‘s shot deflected off the post, securing all three points for Madrid at the Santiago Bernabéu and achieving three victories in three matches in the Champions League this season.
The England midfielder had not found the net since undergoing shoulder surgery in July, but he has now regained his form ahead of the Clásico against Barcelona in LaLiga on Sunday.
«It’s a fantastic feeling, it’s been a long time since I last scored, a significant period out, anticipating that moment, back in the Champions League and versus a major team,» Bellingham stated to CBS. «To net the winner here at home is incredible. I felt at ease, very good. Performing well was crucial, and scoring the decisive goal greatly aids the team.»
«That’s what I appreciate about that type of player,» said goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois. «Vini makes his run, and [Jude] is there, attentive for the second ball.»
«He’s returning to his best form. He had an outstanding match.»
Bellingham thrived in his inaugural season at the Bernabéu, netting 19 goals in LaLiga, but encountered more challenges in 2024-25, as Madrid concluded the season without a significant trophy.
«I didn’t consider last year a disaster,» Bellingham remarked. «[It still resulted in] 15 goals, 14 assists, yet I recognize the overall sentiment was that it was subpar. However, I played a role in our performance not being as strong last year.
«There were still positive moments, but not at the standard I aspire to play at, not at the level like in my first year. Now that I’ve had my shoulder surgery, teamed up with a new manager [Xabi Alonso], he’s established that style, how we intend to play.
«You must take lessons from it.»
Alonso faced criticism for hurriedly reintroducing Bellingham into the lineup for Madrid’s derby loss to Atletico Madrid the previous month, yet the midfielder has shone over the past week.
«Regardless of the goal, Jude delivered a very comprehensive performance,» Alonso commented on Wednesday. «It was challenging, there wasn’t much available space; Juve defended deep. I appreciated his display against Getafe as well as his performance today, and he scored a goal, too. He was competitive, recovered numerous balls, and positioned himself well in the box.
«He’s a player capable of covering ground; he’s versatile, possesses various skills, and understands how to get into the box, which is why he stands out as one of the most complete players in the world.»
Madrid heads into the Clásico two points ahead of Barcelona, having played nine matches.
