Ben Johnson hints Bears will be buyers at trade deadline

The NFL trade deadline is just hours away, and it sounds like we should keep an eye on the Chicago Bears before Tuesday’s 4 p.m. ET deadline.

During his Monday press conference, head coach Ben Johnson told reporters that the Bears are willing to make additions at defensive end and cornerback, both positions that have been ravaged by injuries this season, at the trade deadline. With that said, Johnson said he still feels good about the guys currently on the roster.

Chicago has been dealing with injuries at defensive end. While Austin Booker made his season debut, after missing seven games with a knee injury, they lost free-agent addition Dayo Odeyingbo to a season-ending Achilles injury. Dominique Robinson is currently nursing a high ankle sprain, and Daniel Hardy is the only other option on the roster. It feels like some kind of move will be made.

“It’s wild,» Johnson said. «It feels like we take some strides and it feels like we take some steps back. Felt like we had a solution there with Shemar Turner, then we lose him. We get Austin Booker back and then we lose Dayo (Odeyingbo).”

The Bears have also been dealing with injuries at cornerback, where Jaylon Johnson and Kyler Gordon are currently on injured reserve with their returns to be determined. Chicago’s passing defense just allowed 470 passing yards and four touchdowns to Cincinnati Bengals cornerback Joe Flacco, so there’s a big need in the defensive backfield.

We’ll see if the Bears are able to get a deal done before the deadline. But given the circumstances, and Chicago’s 5-3 record, it feels like general manager Ryan Poles might make a move.
