Broncos receive 'positive update' on Mims' groin ailment

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. — Denver Broncos head coach Sean Payton stated on Thursday that the team received «good news» regarding wide receiver Marvin Mims Jr.’s groin injury and that the third-year player is expected to be ready for the Sept. 7 season opener against the Tennessee Titans.

Mims departed Wednesday’s practice due to the injury, leaving the field with the Broncos’ medical personnel approximately midway through the team’s on-field session. He underwent an MRI and additional evaluations.

«Regarding Marvin, good news, he will return to practice,» Payton mentioned on Thursday. «We have a bonus practice on Monday, and he’ll be working on Monday. So, we’re fortunate.»

Mims has been predominantly featured as a starter on offense throughout training camp and the preseason, with he, Courtland Sutton, and Troy Franklin accumulating the most snaps at receiver alongside quarterback Bo Nix. Mims, who occasionally played running back last season, recorded 39 receptions for 503 yards and six touchdowns.

He also participated in the Pro Bowl for the second consecutive year as a return specialist, leading the league with an average of 15.7 yards per punt return.

Payton has consistently emphasized the desire to increase Mims’ involvement in the offense due to his capacity to generate explosive plays after the catch. He made eight catches for 103 yards, featuring an acrobatic touchdown catch that sent the game into overtime during the Broncos’ Dec. 28 defeat against the Cincinnati Bengals.

Mims expressed earlier in this training camp that he hoped «that game, maybe, caught the coaches’ attention a little or helped them feel more confident; I can contribute more. I want to do more, and I want to earn those chances.»

Mims was selected by the Broncos in the second round of the 2023 draft.
