KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs’ quarterback Patrick Mahomes successfully had surgery on Monday in Dallas to fix the tear in his left ACL, as reported by the team.
The surgical procedure was conducted by Dr. Dan Cooper, who is the head team physician for the Dallas Cowboys. A source within the league informed ESPN that Dr. Cooper also addressed the torn LCL in Mahomes’ left knee, corroborating information from NFL Network.
The Chiefs confirmed that Mahomes «will commence his rehabilitation process immediately.»
Mahomes sustained the injury with under two minutes left in Sunday’s 16-13 defeat against the Chargers, a game that concluded the Chiefs’ playoff aspirations.
When discussing Mahomes’ rehabilitation, he said, «There have been quite a few excellent quarterbacks who faced similar injuries and have come back successfully. He’ll be diligent, and he has excellent professionals around him for his rehab. He’ll stay on top of everything involved.»
Among the notable quarterbacks who have rehabilitated a torn ACL is Tom Brady, who suffered his injury in the 2008 season opener at the age of 31 during his ninth NFL season.
During the latest episode of his «Let’s Go!» podcast on Monday, Brady offered some guidance to Mahomes drawn from his own recovery journey.
«You’ve just got to invest as much effort into the rehabilitation process,» Brady remarked, noting that he won four Super Bowls after his injury. «I believe that the quicker you undergo rehab, the sooner you return to practicing the game you love. Sometimes people tend to take it easy. Rather than being in training mode, they find themselves in rehab mode. My view is that you should push through rehab mode as swiftly as you can, and then transition back to training mode.»
«However, that demands total dedication, the same kind of commitment that top professional athletes apply to excel in their careers. During the rehabilitation process, that same degree of focus and resolve is essential. It’s a challenging rehab. One of the most demanding rehabs you can encounter.»
