It’s official. Texas A&M head coach Mike Elko will be in search of a new offensive coordinator, as second-year OC Collin Klein is headed back to his alma mater, Kansas State, as the program’s latest head coach after nearly ten years as an assistant.
Klein’s growth as a playcaller this season led to starting quarterback Marcel Reed’s career year through the air, as the redshirt sophomore finished the 2025 regular season with 2,932 passing yards and 25 touchdowns, along with 400 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns. Kansas State officially hired Klein on Friday, and he provided his first comments to the media after the news was released earlier this week.

Klein will continue to serve as Texas A&M’s OC and playcaller during the Aggies’ College Football Playoff likely first-round game and beyond (if necessary) before leaving his post. Still, in today’s college football landscape, the former Heisman Trophy finalist will need to start recruiting and reaching out to veteran players in the transfer portal to fill out his 2026 roster.
During his first press conference as the Wildcats’ newest coach, Klein discussed how he’ll balance his offseason head coaching duties with his role as Texas A&M’s OC during the CFP, noting that it will be challenging but exciting.
«I need to ask coach (Bill) Snyder, because he could fit 26 hours in a day somehow. No, I’ll be back and forth. There will be responsibilities during the day when I’m in College Station prepping for the playoff game, whichever round that we’re in that week. And then anytime there’s a break and in the evenings, coming back here and getting going on recruiting, beginning to start building a staff and building relationships with our players.»
After Lane Kiffin left Ole Miss for LSU last weekend, it was revealed that, like Klein, Ole Miss OC Charlie Weis Jr. will continue to serve as the playcaller during the Rebels’ appearance in the CFP. While Weis is taking a lateral move to LSU, it will be interesting to see just how focused, or distracted, Collin Klein will be with all the chaos surrounding his new gig.
