Cowboys WR Mingo probably set to begin season on IR

FRISCO, Texas — Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Jonathan Mingo is expected to begin the season on injured reserve due to a sprained posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee sustained during last week’s preseason matchup with the Baltimore Ravens.

Mingo is anticipated to have a recovery timeline of 4-6 weeks, possibly longer, per a source.

The injury happened on a 49-yard catch along the sideline in the third quarter. He was targeted on the following play and hobbled to the sideline before going into the medical tent, where he was promptly ruled out.

Last year, the Cowboys obtained Mingo along with a seventh-round pick in 2025 in exchange for a 2025 fourth-round selection from the Carolina Panthers. Over eight games, he made five catches for 46 yards, but did not register a reception from starting quarterback Dak Prescott, who was sidelined for the final nine games of 2024 due to a hamstring avulsion that required surgical intervention.

The Cowboys have the option to place two players on injured reserve/designated to return when they finalize their 53-man roster on Aug. 26. Without this designation, a player must be on the 53-man roster for one day before they can move to injured reserve.

Mingo was vying for a receiver position behind CeeDee Lamb, George Pickens, and KaVontae Turpin. With Mingo unavailable to kick off the season, the Cowboys’ final receiver spots will be contested by Jalen Tolbert, Ryan Flournoy, Jalen Brooks, Jalen Cropper, and possibly Traeshon Holden, an undrafted rookie.
