NEW YORK — Jannik Sinner secured his place in the US Open semifinals by defeating No. 10 Lorenzo Musetti 6-1, 6-4, 6-2 on Wednesday evening, marking the first all-Italian encounter in a men’s major quarterfinal.
The No. 1 seed continued his straightforward title defense and is set to face No. 25 seed Felix Auger-Aliassime on Friday, who triumphed over No. 8 Alex De Minaur 4-6, 7-6 (7), 7-5, 7-6 (4).
Sinner has made it to his fifth consecutive Grand Slam semifinal, and a victory on Friday would see him reach the finals of all four majors this year. He has successfully won 26 straight matches in majors on hard courts, including the last two Australian Open titles and his victory in New York last year.
«It was an excellent performance. Very strong, especially starting off very, very well,» Sinner remarked.
He required only two hours on Wednesday — with the first set lasting just 27 minutes — saving all seven break points he faced. In his five matches, he has lost only 38 games, the second fewest by a man reaching the US Open semifinals since 2020.
Sinner, who has claimed 31 consecutive service games, achieved 42 of 46 first-serve points (91%).
Musetti was aiming for his first US Open semifinal after reaching that stage at the French Open this year and at Wimbledon in 2024. However, he struggled at the start against his Davis Cup teammate, trailing 5-0 while winning only nine total points compared to Sinner’s 25 in the first set.
As the match progressed, he began to earn more opportunities against Sinner’s serve but could never secure a break that could have potentially shifted momentum.
«We have to set aside our friendship for the match, and of course, when we shake hands, everything’s alright,» Sinner added.
