'Enjoyable evening': Schwarber achieves MLB's 21st 4-HR game

PHILADELPHIA — Philadelphia power hitter Kyle Schwarber belted four home runs Thursday night versus Atlanta, marking him as the 21st player in major league history and the fourth Phillie to achieve such a milestone.

Schwarber went 4-for-6 with a franchise-best nine RBIs during the 19-4 triumph. He seized the outright lead in home runs within the National League, reaching a career-high 49 and is just one behind Seattle’s Cal Raleigh for the overall major league lead. Schwarber also leads all of Major League Baseball with a personal-best 119 RBIs.

«It’s really awesome,» Schwarber remarked. «It was an exciting evening, wonderful atmosphere. I wouldn’t want to do it with a better group of teammates than we have here.»

Mike Schmidt was the most recent Philadelphia player to achieve four home runs in a single game, accomplishing the feat against the Chicago Cubs in April 1976. Schwarber’s outing marked the third four-homer game this season, joining Eugenio Suárez and Nick Kurtz.

Cal Quantrill delivered a 2-1 curveball that sailed into the right-field stands. Schwarber flew out to center in the second inning.

After Quantrill was removed with one out and two men on in the fourth, Schwarber welcomed left-handed pitcher Austin Cox by sending a 3-2 curveball over the right field wall for his fourth multi-homer game of the season.

With chants of «M-V-P! M-V-P!» echoing from Phillies supporters in the fifth inning, Schwarber hit a three-run blast to left off Cox, putting Philadelphia in the lead 15-3. In the seventh, Schwarber crushed a three-run homer to right off Wander Suero, extending the score to 18-4.

Schwarber popped out in the eighth against Braves third baseman Vidal Brujan.

«I struggle against position players,» Schwarber joked. «All you’re aiming for is to get a good pitch. I got the pitch. Just popped it up.»

At 32, Schwarber has amassed 333 home runs over 11 seasons in the majors with the Cubs and Phillies. His previous career high was 47 in 2023 with Philadelphia.
