End of Extra Time – It’s going to take penalties to resolve this one with players on both sides looking quite shattered.

121’ – Fulltime whistle, it’s still 1-1 and we’re going to a penalty shootout.

120’ – Can’t be more than a minute of time added on here, can Everton hold on?
Tarky holds off Isidor, and then Armstrong with a brilliant sliding tackle on Le Fee. Ball cleared for a throw-in on the Everton right, and Mundle’s speculative shot is wayward.

118’ – Armstrong also hobbling now, he looks like he’s cramping up as well.
Aznou harries Roefs on a clearance, Sunderland can attack though. Ball falls to Xhaka outside the box, he shoots.. Pickford commits to his right, it hits Tarky and flashes wide of the other post!! Whew!
Corner goes outside the box, back into the box, Isidor header well over.

115’ – Barry bodies Le Fee off the ball in his own half, and then sets off on a slashing run through midfield. He gets hauled down by Hume who is booked.
Another young defender on now as Patto goes off and Reece Welch is on. He’s a right-sided centrehalf, playing at right back now.

114’ – Patterson is down with cramps, and is hobbling about now.

112’ – The Beto experience encapsulated in a couple of minutes. Tries to take on his man 1-on-1, loses the ball, realizes he’s sold his teammates short so he chases the ball all the way back as Sunderland attack until Pickford collects the ball. Then as he looks to provide an out ball, he fouls O’Nien.

108’ – Both teams are probing away without committing too men to the attack.
Now Mukiele gets his hands around Aznou’s neck as he chases the ball, and he will be booked despite his vocal and demonstrative protests.

106’ – Second half of extra time underway.

Extra Time Halftime – Brobbey, who just came on, is going off and Isidor is on. Close-up shot of Pickford’s water bottle showing the penalty tendencies of the Sunderland players. He’s done his homework.

114’ – Everton make another sub, with youngster Elijah Campbell on for Myko. He’s a left-footed defender, will be a like-for-like sub.
No time to be added on, and the halftime whistle goes. The players will stay on the pitch for a quick turnaround, no retreat to the dressing rooms.

112’ – Now Aznou fizzes a low cross into the six-yard box, but no Everton shirts close to it.
Barry intercepts a pass in the middle, and immediately Garner sends him on his way, he plays Beto into space, he shoots.. ooof, wide, into the side netting.

101’ – McNeil intercepts a pass and Barry sets off with the ball, his return pass is cut out though.

98’ – Ball bounces to Xhaka in the box, shot blocked for a corner by Myko. Low and Myko heads away. Beto cuts out the ensuing cross, another corner in front of the away support.
Le Fee with a low flick-on, Tarky clears! Now Everton are hemmed into their box. Next cross in, Pickford collects.

96’ – Barry wins it on the right in the middle, his pass to Beto is overhit but the Blues can retain possession.
Aznou cross overhit, Blues regain possession. Armstrong plays a 1-2 with Beto, but his shot is way over.

95’ – Second shot in two minutes for Mundle, Pickford saw both well and punched both clear.

93’ – Blues fight to win the ball on their right, and Beto sets off, but is hounded by three players and loses it.

91’ – Everton get us underway in extra time, two 15-minute halves and then a penalty shootout if needed.

Regulation Time Thoughts – Bit of a soft penalty, but Everton will feel they were due the rub of the green after how the last few days have gone for the club.

90+4’ – End of regulation time here, and we will be going to two halves of 15 minutes each of extra time.

90+3’ – Long throw from the Everton left, Armstrong clears. Garner blocks a cross and it will be a corner for the visitors.
Xhaka inswinger, cleared at the front post, back into the box, and the Blues hoof it clear!

90+2’ – Barry goes in the book for tugging his man back.
Four minutes supposed to be added on here. If FA Cup games are tied at regulation time, they go to extra time and then penalties if required.

90’ – Aznou on the ball again and fouled again!! Ballard is booked now. Freekick for the Blues from the left. Garner into the box, overhit and cleared. Aznou pops up in the other wing, ball goes out for a goalkick.

88’ – Aznou’s first involvement is telling!! His low cross is blocked, he goes hunting the ball and is hacked down by Hume, and it’s a penalty!!
James Garner steps up with the responsibility, and he scores!! Slides it under Roefs who dived to his left correctly, and it’s 1-1!

86’ – Adam Aznou is coming on for Merlin Rohl, making his Everton debut.

83’ – Sunderland controlling the ball on the left, a shooting chance from a narrow angle for Cirkin, but it’s well wide.

78’ – Now McNeil gets in space on the right, left footed inswinger and Barry peels away from his man and his diving header is just wide. Much better.

77’ – JOB charges forward and wins a freekick on the edge of the attacking third. Garner takes it short for Armstrong peeling away, he can’t get a cross in though. Good idea, poor execution.
Myko deep cross, Tarky header from the penalty spot, but no control on the shot.

74’ – Deep cross from Myko, Patto heads it down, falls to McNeil for a shot that is rising all the time from long, long away.
The Toffees finally make a change, and it’s an obvious one – Thierno Barry is on for Tyler Dibling.

71’ – The freekick is good but no Blue shirts on it and Myko is overpowered on the left. Sunderland are playing the ball back and forth now as they are happy to see the clock tick down with their back five now.

70’ – Cirkin late on Garner and it’s an Everton freekick from the right.
Sunderland making the first subs with Mayenda and Adingra off, and Brobbey and Ballard on. Still no activity from the Blues who are behind in this game, if anyone needed reminding.

67’ – Myko sidesteps Adingra, marches forward and fires in a shot from a central area, straight at the goalie though. Still no sign of a substitute from the Blues.

65’ – Everton down the right, Patto cross into the box, and Beto and Hume grappling with each other as the striker goes down and wants a penalty. John Brooks waves play on, there wasn’t much in that.

63’ – Sunderland quick break down the Everton middle with short passes, finds Mayenda who worms away from O’Brien and fires a shot wide of the far post. That’s the danger with pushing forward more for the Blues.
Mundle wins a freekick off Patto. Into the box, partly cleared by the Blues, and then a Sunderland player is offside.

60’ – Ball into the box flicked on by Cirkin and Pickford has to step in to clear.
Roefs flails at a cross, and then back into the box from Myko, and the goalie is nowhere near it again, but once again Everton cannot get a head to the ball.

56’ – Ugly scenes here as Garner harries Mundle and gets in a sliding tackle that the Sunderland player seems to take offense to. Some argy-bargy and more players get involved, but all is resolved somewhat amicably.

55’ – Everton’s second half possession numbers are much better at 59%.

52’ – Dibling playing like Moyes got in his ear at the half. Doing much better showing for the ball now. Patterson sees a low cross smothered, and then another is overhit. Everton are camped in the Black Cats’ half.

50’ – Cannot say enough how much I like this Everton fourth kit. We’ll have an article about it later in the day.

49’ – The right side is working well, sets up Garner for a cross lofted into the box, Beto gets a head to it but little power, Roefs takes. Much much better now.

48’ – Dibling’s first moment of quality of this game releases Patterson down the right, cross into the box doesn’t find an Everton shirt though. Encouraging.

46’ – Sunderland gets the second half underway.

Halftime Thoughts – Everton simply do not have the quality here to sustain control and create chances with any kind of consistency. Sunderland can sit back and pick them off in the second half, and Moyes has little on the bench he can use to change this.

45+4’ – Halftime whistle goes, and Moyes jogs into the dressing room as a small boo goes around the ground. The fans are not impressed by the Blues here.

45+3’ – Now Rohl wins the ball and instead of trying a softer touch to Beto, hums it in and it goes straight to Roefs. On the best of days Beto doesn’t have good control, there was no way he was slowing that down.

45+1’ – Sadiki pulls down Armstrong who is running away from him and is booked by John Brooks. First yellow card of the game. Ball skims to Mykolenko in a central position, but is leaning back and his shot climbs over the bar from over thirty yards out.

45’ – Long diagonal finds Dibling but his first touch is awful. Rohl then commits a foul trying to win the ball.
Three plus minutes to be added on here.

43’ – Again Everton can’t break out of their box, turnover just outside the box and Mundle fires a shot goalwards and flying save from Pickford to keep the visitors out again.
Another training ground manouvre, and this one the Blues can get to. Beto wins a foul in the Sunderland half and the pressure is relieved.

40’ – Mundle wins a corner on the Everton right. Sent out all the way outside the box, headed back into the box by O’Nien and Tarky does well to block it and it’s another corner.
Inswinger, partly headed away, Mukiele scissorkick but Pickford saves very well! Whew that was close to a Tarky deflection too.

37’ – Now Myko with a shooting chance as McNeil finds him on the overlap, goes just wide of the far post, goalie did look to have it covered if not got a fingertip on it. Ref says goalkick though even though the replays confirm that should have been a corner.

36’ – Garner foul gives the visitors a chance just outside the box. Ball into the box, Tarky clears, but Patterson gives it right back to Le Fee whose snapshot is at Pickford this time.

29’ – Patient build-up from the Black Cats, probing at the Everton left but O’Brien quick to clear. Long throw-in, not cleared well, Rohl cannot make contact and it falls to Le Fee who curls it into the far corner, not a chance for Pickford and Sunderland lead 1-0. Terrible defending.

27’ – Now a Tarky diagonal into the box, and Armstrong and Beto crash into each other, and then Roefs catches the ball and lands heavily on the young midfielder with a boot to the head. Armstrong is getting a concussion check on the pitch, but looks okay to continue.

25’ – Everton holding and distributing the ball in a much more coherent manner.
The Blues attacking with a 3-on-2 on the left, but the ref stops play with Cirkin down holding his head. The crowd is quite unhappy about that decision, but that’s the modern gameplay stops for all head injuries.

23’ – Rohl wins another freekick in the middle. Garner again into the box, Tarky header again too, but this time Sunderland can clear. Adingra tries to break down the touchline but is ushered out by Myko.

22’ – Rohl wins a freekick on the edge of the attacking third. Garner puts it into the box, Tarky heads it back across and oooh!! Armstrong sliced his shot just over the bar, headed into the top corner. Excellent form on the shot, just a hair off.

20’ – Possession at a much more civilized 34% now for the Blues.

18’ – Everton’s press works this time and McNeil harries his man on a back pass to Roefs, his clearance is rushed, comes to Rohl and he tries an ambitious shot from over 30 yards out and goes well wide.
That brings the home crowd to life though and Everton have seen a lot more of the ball in the last few minutes.

15’ – Everton’s first sustained attack ends up with a shot by Tarkowski from outside the box hitting a teammate.

14’ – Adingra shot blocked by an Everton defender in the box and the Sunderland fans behind the goal on the far side want a penalty, but nothing doing. Shot went off Tarky’s arm, which was tight to his body and in front of him. Also, no VAR for this game.

12’ – One way traffic here, frustrating here. Possession is 86% to 14% to the visitors here!

8’ – Good steals from Rohl then Garner in the middle, but little attacking thrust from that. Still all Sunderland here.

5’ – Sunderland have had all the early possession, including seeing plenty of the ball in the Everton box but just haven’t been able to get a shot on goal. This looks to be a long slog for the Blues.

1’ – Garner gets us underway with Everton in their special dark blue fourth kit!

Starting Lineups

Everton – Iroegbunam has a minor injury and will miss the game.

Sunderland – Looks close to full strength for the visitors.

Match Preview

Another FA Cup campaign starts this weekend for Everton who were unfortunate enough to draw fellow Premier League side Sunderland in the Third Round.

Everton’s squad woes continued with two red cards in the midweek league draw against Wolves, with Michael Keane and Jack Grealish joining the ranks on the sidelines as David Moyes struggles to cobble together eleven players to cart out onto the pitch.

Sunderland sit two spots and a point ahead of the Blues in the league, and given how much of a fight they gave the Toffees, this game could be anyone’s to win.
