Teofimo Lopez spent a few minutes giving his immediate reaction to Vergil Ortiz’s knockout win over Erickson Lubin on Saturday night, admitting that he was surprised with how quickly Ortiz was able to get the job done. Here’s some of what Lopez had to say on his perspective of what took place inside the ring and where Ortiz goes from here.
Lopez on his reaction to Ortiz’s stoppage of Lubin
“Just like Oscar was mentioning, I’m a little bit shocked how it happened. I was thinking a little bit longer in a sense but he took action and he came right to it. You know, obviously he has a lot of competitors watching him, as far as Vergil goes, and he showed them that he’s here to stay at the super welterweight division.”
On whether fans should be disappointed if Ortiz vs Boots doesn’t happen next
“A little bit only if it’s no for them aiming for world titles. But I think at this point people really don’t care less about it, they just want to see them fight. But you heard Vergil here at the post press conference, he was literally saying ‘I want all the belts.’…So I think that’s what he’s aiming towards and so is Boots. He literally dropped down all his belts to come to 154, so belts do matter but to the fan base, they just want to see guys that are in the top level fight each other already.”
On what he saw happen to Lubin in the fight
“I think Lubin, just his energy dropped in the second round. Maybe it could’ve been those body shots. I mean, Vergil hits very hard to the body so that really could take all your legs right away, and him leaning back, that’s Vergil’s game right there. If you staying like that in the shell he’s going to drop you and that’s what he did. He stunned him so bad. I don’t think I’ve seen anybody hurt Lubin like that other than Charlo.”
