How all Iowa City wrestlers fared at the Iowa girls state tournament

The 2026 Iowa girls state wrestling tournament featured 12 local wrestlers and three teams from the Iowa City area — headlined by a breakout performance by Iowa City West sophomore Eva Jara.

Jara was the No. 9 seed at 190 pounds and shined in her state tournament debut. She placed second at state, securing victories over the No. 8 seed, No. 1 seed and No. 4 seed en route to the state finals.

Her biggest win was a 6-4 decision over former state champion and top-seeded Briar Ludeman of Cedar Falls.

«Last year was my first year wrestling and I was out for a good portion of it because of an injury to my clavicle,» Jara said. «This year I came in with a strong mentality, ‘I’m going to give everything I have’. A little bit of emotion stirred throughout the season, but I always tried to give everything I could and … plan for the worst, hope for the best.»

Jara may have come up short against the No. 2 seed in the state title match, but she flexed her grit against the best wrestlers in the state.

Iowa City High, Iowa City Liberty and Iowa City West were represented in Class 2A at Xtream Arena in Coralville from Feb. 5-6.
