‘I can’t fight my opponent and fight the judges’: Lamont Roach reacts to draw with Isaac Cruz

“Honestly, obviously I’ve proved that I’ll fight anyone,” Roach said. “Again, this is not my natural weight. I moved up again and fought a tough competitor in Isaac Cruz, but two times in a row, it’s crazy. I can’t fight my opponent and fight the judges. It’s something we got to do about it. I think I won and I think I definitely outboxed him. All I need is an even playing field.

“I’m going to come out there and show my skills, I’m going to show my grit, my will, everything else, and not to mention I think I broke my hand in like the fifth round or something like that.”

Roach would then be asked about how he approached this fight, standing and trading in the pocket with Cruz more than some might’ve anticipated.

“Obviously everybody see Pitbull just one way. When I got in there I was like ‘he’ll probably give me some leeway.’ So when he did, I took it. And I felt more comfortable right there, honestly. I think boxing him was good, I was mixing it up, but when you get those opportunities to back up a pressure fighter it’s something in them that’s like ‘damn, he ain’t going away or moving backwards. Why is he not moving backwards, why is this not working?’ And you can by the way he started skating around the ring, trying to change his game plan up…

“I disrupted him, I started winning rounds, and that was after I broke my hand.”
