Injured sprinter Thomas won't run at track worlds

AUSTIN, Texas — Olympic medalist Gabby Thomas will be absent from this month’s world track championships due to an Achilles tendon injury she’s been managing since May.

Thomas, the U.S. athlete who claimed victory in the 200-meter dash in Paris and participated in the gold medal-winning 4×100- and 4×400-meter relay teams, indicated that she aggravated the injury in July.

«I recognize that this news may be disheartening for certain track enthusiasts, but I have ultimately come to terms with the fact that it’s acceptable to prioritize my health,» Thomas expressed in a statement on Tuesday.

The world championships are scheduled for Sept. 13-21 in Tokyo.

Last month, Thomas did not appear to be in peak condition at the U.S. nationals, where she narrowly clinched the third and final position in the 200 by just .001 seconds. The 28-year-old stated her intention to compete in 2026.
